St Dionysios Church

Agios Dionysios is the largest church in Zakynthos and celebrates on December 17, which is the Feast Day of Agios Dionysios, Patron Saint, and Protector of the island.

This holy and miraculous church was slowly built from 1925 and was finally completed in 1948, only a few years before the devastating earthquake of 1953. It is one of the three buildings that did not have any damage at all by the earthquake, which is considered a miracle and blessing by the locals.

Agios Dionysios was born in Zakynthos in 1547. At the age of 20 decided to join a monastery a few miles off the coast of Zakynthos. After living there for a while he was encouraged to be ordained as a priest, that of which he did and later became the Archbishop of Aegina. He spent the last years of his life at the Monastery of Anaforitria in Zakynthos where he passed away at the age of 75 on the 17th December 1622.

It was there at the Monastery Anafonitria that Agios Dionysios lied for the first time, by hiding his brother’s murderer and then helping him escape the island. This is why Agios Dionysios is considered Saint of Forgiveness, as he forgave his brother’s murderer.

Zante Town

Zakynthos is located at the base of the hill of Bochali and it is chief town and main port of the island.
After the earthquake that in 1953 destroyed the city the reconstruction works began and now it looks like a modern city to the tourist.

Marathonisi Island

Marathonissi is a small island in the turtles’ bay close to Limni Kerì’s beach.
Until the second world war the island was lived, today it has neither inhabitants nor buildings.
It is now one of the areas where the CARETTA CARETTA turtles go to breed.
You can visit the island by private boat or by organized tourists’ visits by caique.

There are two beautiful beaches: one of pebbles, reachable by swimming from a huge cave, the other one is a large sand area. For those coming with their own boat, we suggest visiting the Kerì Caves, a few minutes by boat from the island along Marathia’s Cape coast.

Cameo Island

The small isle of Cameo in the Bay of Laganas is picturesque and it is remarkable for the pines which grow there in the small port of Agios Sostis.

The small island is privately owned and is located at the left part of the Gulf of Laganas.
Until 1633, Cameo was attached to the central nucleus of Zakynthos but following violent earthquakes, it became completely detached.
Nowadays, during the summer period, you can reach the by means of a wooden bridge and there are two bars on the island, one with its own private beach.
Undoubtedly, the most picturesque place in Laganas Bay.

Bochali

Bochali is a lovely and small village at the top of the promontory rising at the back of the city of Zakynthos.
We suggest to visit the place, where it is really worth it, at sunset or at night when the landscape of the enlighten city and the harbour bay are really beautiful.

In spite of the small dimensions of the village there are different restaurants offering a romantic dinner under the stars. You can visit Bochali even by day to take pictures of the small church of Zoodos Pigi with its Byzantine icons, or of the ancient Venetian castle.

The castle, partly destroyed by the earthquake that in 1953 hit the island.

Kampi

Kampi is a cliff that offers you a breathtaking landscape and unforgettable sunsets. From the top of the cliff the view can space from the infinite blue of the Ionian sea to the underlying bay where the seals go there every year to breed in the marine caves.

Visiting Kampi, in addition to visiting the huge concrete cross in memory of the deceased of the civil war, you can also visit other villages of the area, such as Exo Chora and Maries, where residents are still living on farming and handicraft and where the time seems to run slower than ever.
In those villages you can have the chance to buy hand made products or natural food like honey and local olive oil.
